Our story begins in 2005 in the coastal town of Hanko, where the Ekström family opened a small fish shop and restaurant by the harbor.
It was founded by Magnus Ekström — a chef raised in a family of fishermen, with three generations of seafaring tradition behind him. Growing up with the sea as part of everyday life, Magnus wanted to bring two worlds together: the craft of fishing and the joy of cooking — and to let the clean, natural flavors of the Baltic Sea speak for themselves.
What started as a simple fish stall gradually grew into a cozy harbor restaurant and became a familiar part of life in Hanko. Over the years the business evolved, but the heart of it never changed: freshness, tradition, and deep respect for the sea.
Today, that same spirit lives on at Hakaniemi Market Hall in Helsinki — Ekströms Fiskebod / Ekströmin Kalapuoti. Here we continue to do what we’ve always done: serve truly fresh fish, local ingredients, and honest coastal flavors.
